Duane Michals a Photographer Who Uses Text To Expand on His stories

  • As a photographer I always wanted to add text to my images.  Many people told me that a photo should speak for itself.  Yes, it can, but I find nothing wrong to add a poem or a short text that would evoke a different response.  In other words, sometimes the photographer can drive the narrative or better yet the audience can dispute it thereby creating a dialogue, which makes it all the more interesting.   Looking at Duane Michals photographs I think it does just that.
  • Take for example the photograph above.  Looking at the photo and the text seemingly complement each other.  A declaration that something did happen on that date.  However, one might think perhaps the photograph was staged and contrived to look that way.
  • I often do this with my images where I take an image and combine it with text in order to force a meaning. Barbara Kruger did this with her work, although oftentimes the images were found images. Nevertheless, the text used was to highlight issues of the day such as feminism, racism, etc.
